What is Twitter?<\/strong>
\nTwitter is a real-time information network sharing short messages called \u201ctweets\u201d that are just 140 characters long. \u00a0Twitter is a social network which allows people to choose which accounts they will follow and what information they wish to share with the people that follow them. This video from Commoncraft<\/a> is a great overview of how Twitter works.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 A lot of organisations, including libraries, also use Twitter. \u00a0Some examples include: \u00a0@britishlibrary<\/a>, @librarycongress<\/a>, @nlnz<\/a>\u00a0 and @PublicLibrarySG<\/a> .<\/p>\n

A lot of individuals also use Twitter, including astronauts<\/a>, celebrities (eg. @wilw<\/a>, @algore<\/a>), authors (@maureenjohnson<\/a>, @anitaheiss<\/a>), sports people<\/a>, royalty<\/a>\u00a0 and parody<\/a> accounts. \u00a0 There are also verified accounts as it is easy to imitate a person on Twitter (see the many accounts posing as Aung San Suu Kyi for example).\u00a0 If you’re still not convinced that Twitter is for you, Ned Potter<\/a> addresses some of the concerns people may have about Twitter in “7 reasons people don\u2019t use twitter, and why \u2018It\u2019s a conversation\u2019 is the answer to all of them<\/em><\/a>“<\/p>\n

What is a hashtag and how does it work?<\/strong>
\nOne of the features of Twitter is the use of hashtags<\/a>. \u00a0They act as hyperlinks connecting conversations. \u00a0The use of hashtags to link conversations together has also carried over into other social networking tools like Instagram, Google+, Pinterest and Tumblr. \u00a0Hashtags are particularly useful for regular conversations #kidlit<\/a>, natural disasters #eqnz<\/a>, \u00a0sporting events and teams #cricket<\/a>, events #ifla<\/a> #tedx<\/a> and conferences #sxsw<\/a>.<\/p>\n
