TTW post\" href=\"http:\/\/tametheweb.com\/2011\/06\/14\/what-is-%E2%80%9Csocial-reading%E2%80%9D-and-why-should-libraries-care-a-ttw-guest-post-by-allison-mennella\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cWhat is \u201cSocial Reading\u201d and why should Libraries care?\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 and <a title=\"Goodreads - Website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Goodreads<\/a> and <a title=\"LibraryThing - Website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.librarything.com\/talk\" target=\"_blank\">LibraryThing<\/a> are popular options)<\/li>\n<li>activities like online book clubs (eg <a title=\"Read Watch Play - Website\" href=\"http:\/\/readwatchplay.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Read Watch Play<\/a> Twitter reading group) and Twitter chats (eg. #libchat #uklibchat #rwpchat)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For this Thing, in keeping with our focus on mobile technologies, we have chosen to look at the mobile apps that support reading social media and RSS feeds efficiently. \u00a0Until recently, Google Reader was one of the most popular rss readers and the<a title=\"Google Blog post A second spring of cleaning\" href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com.au\/2013\/03\/a-second-spring-of-cleaning.html\" target=\"_blank\"> announcement that it would be discontinued <\/a>after July 1, 2013\u00a0 caused a great disturbance in the library world and further afield.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>DISCOVER:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>So what is RSS and why does it matter? RSS feeds are fixed pre programmed streams of \u201clatest\u201d content used to publish frequently updated works, like blog posts and lists of new items added to a library catalogue. \u00a0RSS together with APIs are two of the ways your apps and some other web tools collect new information. This <a title=\"Commoncraft video - RSS in plain English\" href=\"http:\/\/www.commoncraft.com\/video\/rss\" target=\"_blank\">Commoncraft video explains RSS in plain English<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you want to follow a number of blogs and other social media feeds you will need an aggregator. \u00a0Try out <a title=\"Feedly - website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.feedly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Feedly <\/a>which will draw together your RSS feeds, Tumblr blogs and Youtube channels (<a title=\"Android - Feedly app\" href=\" https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.devhd.feedly\" target=\"_blank\">Android<\/a> and <a title=\"IOS - Feedly app\" href=\" https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/feedly\/id396069556 \" target=\"_blank\">iOS<\/a> apps available)<\/li>\n<li>Do you need to save something to read later? <a title=\"Pocket - Website\" href=\"http:\/\/getpocket.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pocket<\/a>\u00a0 is available for Android and iOS and works with quite a few other programs and apps. \u00a0You can save directly from your browser or from apps like Twitter, Flipboard, Pulse and Zite.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>EXPLORE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Flipboard - app tour\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flipboard.com\/app-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flipboard<\/a>, an app that aggregates your social media feeds (including RSS) allowing you to view your own \u2018magazine\u2019 and to share it with your friends.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Newsblur - website\" href=\"http:\/\/newsblur.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">NewsBlur<\/a>\u00a0 is another option with web, iPad, iPhone, and Android options.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Pulse - website\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pulse.me\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pulse<\/a> aggregates blogs, magazines, social networks and newspapers.<\/li>\n<li>Do you set out to gather together items you\u2019ve read around themes to reshare like a newspaper or magazine? \u00a0You can use tools like Paper.li and Scoop.it etc.\u00a0\u00a0 See the <a title=\"Pinterest - Creating and curating online newspapers\" href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\/myleej\/creating-and-curating-online-newspapers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pinterest board<\/a> for more options.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>THINKING POINTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which top 3 blogs do you rely on for keeping up to date with trends in the GLAM industry?
